TESTING YOUR INGREDIENTS Basic
HOW TO TELL IF YEAST, BAKING POWDER AND BAKING SODA ARE NO LONGER ACTIVE:
YEAST: Mix 1/4 cup of lukewarm water (105 - 115 degrees), 1 package of dry yeast and 1 TSP. Of sugar in a small bowl and set aside in a warm dry spot for 5 minutes. If the mixture bubbles and froths, the yeast is viable.
BAKING POWDER: Place 2 TSP.. Of baking powder in a small bowl and add 1 TBSP. of boiling water. If the mixture foams dramatically, the baking powder hasn’t lost its punch.
BAKING SODA: Place 1 ½ TSP.. Of baking soda in a small bowl and add 1 TBSP. of vinegar. If the mixture doesn’t fizz, buy a new box. |
