WALNUT SQUARES                                     Faucette family
1/3 c shortening (butter, oleo or crisco)
1 ½ c brown sugar firmly packed
½ tsp. salt
1 1/4 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
3/4 c sifted flour
1 tsp. baking powder
3/4 c chopped walnuts

Mix shortening, 1 c brown sugar, salt, 1 tsp. vanilla, and unbeaten egg yolk together until forms creamy batter. Add ½ c nuts.

Sift flour, baking powder together and add to above mix.

Spoon into pan (greased 7x11 sq. pan) spread evenly.

Beat egg whites until stiff. Add remaining sugar and vanilla until smooth. Spread on top of batter in a pan. Sprinkle on remaining nuts.

Bake 30‑40 minutes at 325 degrees.

Cut in small squares.
